Discover Mauao with a self-guided immersive audio event.
Cancellation of the much-anticipated Tauranga Arts Festival was yet another cruel Covid blow, but
a key (and free) event remains as part of the line up, along with the Visual Arts Programme (details below). Combining music with adventure, Te Manawataki o Mauao, 21–31 October, “takes audiences on a journey that will evolve how they perceive the natural world. A meditative and immersive event, this piece uncovers the hidden treasures of Mount Maunganui”. We’re liking the sound of that.
Created by respected musician Riki Gooch, in collaboration with Sonicity, the creative team worked with the guardians or kaitiaki of Mauao to reflect their experience — the result is a music and soundscape that’s designed to “evoke land, skies and sea”. Bring your phone and headphones, download the free Te Manawataki o Mauao app and turn on your geo-locator. Start from anywhere (although beginning on the Pilot Bay side of Mauao is recommended), pick a track on the maunga and be part of this one-of-a-kind experience.
